Kids In The Kitchen

Drew ran across this old Better Homes and Gardens kid’s cookbook I used years ago with Abby and Aaron. Back then I had both kids fix supper one night a week so they could learn to cook. Aaron loved it – he was pretty good in the kitchen.  Lasagna was his specialty! Abby on the other hand – she would make macaroni and cheese or frozen pizza. She had more important things to do than learn to cook although I think she does a pretty good job now. It’s amazing how getting married and having kids changes what is important in your life – gotta feed the family! Eric never wanted to even try but now that he’s worked at Casey’s in the kitchen I think he can find his way around the kitchen too.

Anyway – Drew found the cookbook, sat down and went through it and asked if he could make pancakes. This was not on my list of things to get done for the day but I have been wanting to work with him in the kitchen this summer so I figured I might as well get started. The best time to introduce something new to this kid is when he shows interest, otherwise it may or may not happen. So, pancakes it was. With a lot of help, a few giggles, and a few stern explanations as to why we don’t goof around when using a hot griddle – Drew stated he made the best homemade pancakes ever!

Cutie Patootie

Drew wanted to help me today finish mixing up the flavors for shave ice. I’m sure you can imagine how much help a seven year old boy is around lots of liquid and sugary syrup! But, all in all, his help outweighed his hindrance and I’m glad I agreed to let him. At one point he did something, I don’t even remember what it was he did, and I thanked him and called him Cutie Patootie. He immediately said, “Mom, I live for those moments.” When I asked him what moments he was talking about he responded with, “When you call me Cutie Patootie!” Just goes to show, you never know what your words mean to others! He’s not only my Cutie Patootie, he’s my Monster Man, Silly Willy, Monster Magillaguppie, Sneaky Pete, Pete Monster, Drew Bear or just plain Charlie or Pete. Guess I’ll use Cutie Patootie more often though!

And a sid note – for some reason I’ve always called all my boys Pete when they were little. I have no idea why. But one day when my dad heard me call one of them Pete he asked me if I knew my Great Grandpa Asbery went by Pete. I had had no idea – but I guess somewhere, somehow I knew the name Pete meant something to me!

First Day of Summer Vacation!

(Before it got too hot and while Bayah was asleep -
we went outside and made slime!)

Drew didn’t get to sleep in on his first day of summer vacation – he had to be up by 5:30 so we could leave the house by 6:00 but he was fine with that. He got to spend the day with his nephew and niece – something he loves to do. He and I drove to Kalona to babysit for the day – what a great way to start off the summer!

(Bayah snuggles!)

Just Like That

And just like that my baby is a 2nd grader! Yesterday was the last day of school for this young man. As you can see, he didn’t want his picture taken. He wasn’t in the best of moods. He told me on the way into town he wanted to be homeschooled. He wasn’t going to miss his friends because most of them annoyed him. He was just plain grumpy. In other words, he was unhappy that it was the last day of school and so his way of handling it was to grump! School only lasted three hours so when I picked him up at 11:00, we went uptown and toured the new antique store. He takes after me – he loves, loves, loves to wander through an antique store to see what treasures can be found! Today he found an old canteen to go along with his coon skin cap!  Then I took him out for lunch. He was so excited. I asked him if he wanted me to ask Eric to join us for lunch and he was adamant that it only be me and him. (I told him by the end of the summer he would be really tired of it just being me and him!) And then we came home and played cars and legos!

Randomness

I love finding these random notes from Drew. You never know when or where you will find one. I found this one posted on the refrigerator door – he knew I would definitely find it there!

Last night we ran to Menards to get supplies for our next outdoor project. I really hate spending the money but we have put these things off for too long and it’s time to get them done. Since Menards is self-serve we rarely have anybody offer to help us and last night was no exception. I’m sure those young male workers got a kick out of watching a 51 year old overweight lady help load up the trailer with 10′ pieces of lumber, 40 pound bags of sand and 53 landscaping blocks. By the time we were done I was dripping with sweat and could hardly move – now that is a workout! And yes, the trailer is sitting beside another project for this summer – one of two buildings that have to come down. The work just never ends!

Oh The Smells!

I keep seeing all these beautiful spring flower pictures all over the internet and I’ve just been so busy I haven’t thought about bringing any flowers in the house. But today, I ran out and picked some lilacs and some lily of the valley. And Drew picked me a beautiful bouquet of wildflowers yesterday while at Belva Deer. My front rooms smell so wonderful!

A First For Me

After four kids you would think I would have it down. But apparently not – although I could chalk it up to old age! Yesterday I got Drew up for school like every Monday morning. We got around and headed to town to drop him off at school. When we got there I noticed there wasn’t anybody around. I looked at the clock and saw we were about five minutes earlier than normal so told Drew we would drive around for a few minutes and then come back. As I was driving away I realized – there was no school. It was a teacher in-service day. I had just written it down on the calendar last week and had looked at the calendar over the weekend and – I forgot. Thank goodness I didn’t drop him off and head home. That would have been a disaster. Four kids and all these years of dropping them off and this was a first. And hopefully a last! Drew thought it was so funny and couldn’t wait to tell his dad! I am just thankful my mother’s intuition kicked in and I sensed somehing wasn’t right before I just left him there. So we decided to run to Osky and run errands and Drew got a new Lego set – a Minecraft set. We love Lego!

Birthday Fun

This little man turned 7 on the 13th. We celebrated with Grandpa and Grandma on his birthday with homemade pizza and angel food cake. Then yesterday we celebrated again with the whole family.  He requested pigs in a blanket, creamed peas and lemon cupcakes with strawberry frosting and that is what he got – along with fruit salad and homemade ice cream. The perfect menu for a 7 year old! The Nerf guns came out along with the giggles and laughter as the big kids love the Nerf guns just as much if not more than the little ones!  The weather was perfect and the chickens kept everyone entertained. It was a fun family filled day!

Busy Doing Nothing

Sweet little bunny Drew made at the afterschool program at the public library last week. They make the cutest craft projects!

I’m sitting here with the TV on watching Sister Wives – not sure why I watch this show but I do. Joe thinks I’m crazy to watch it but he’s gone tonight for work so I have a free evening to watch what I want and since Dew wanst to entertain himself right now I’m watching what I want!  I have Drew behind me playing away with his train set in the dining room and I can hear the rain coming down. I love love the rain! It’s just nice and cozy right now. I feel like we’ve been so busy lately and yet we’ve really not been doing much of anything. We haven’t accomplished anything big around here. Once in awhile it’s nice to do nothing but once the weather starts to cooperate we’re going to have to get busy and get things done around here.

Drew and his fort he has set up in the living room. It’s been up for about a week – I think it’s getting to be about time to bring it down!

I spent the day in town today with a friend. How nice to spend a day just visiting. We hadn’t gotten together since way before Christmas and it was just time. I’ve become something of a hermit lately. I like to be home. I’m content to be home. I’ve gotten really good at isolating and I have to make myself spend time out and about. When I don’t it gets harder and harder for me to get out and socialize. It was nice to get out and converse with somebody in person and just get away from the house and I need to make myself do it more often. The longer I go without socializing the harder it gets for me to get out and I have to make myself get out of my comfort zone of home!

Tina Woltman designs.

I have gotten a lot of stitching done over the last few weeks. These two are getting filled with crushed walnut shells and then I’ll stitch them up. I’m not sure if I want to sell these or keep them for myself. I’ll probably try and sell them and then stitch up two more for myself. I’m loving how they are turning out and will hate to see them go. I love Tina Woltman designs. They are so prim perfect!
