Weekend Randomness

We had no set plans for the weekend. Joe was gone all last week – gone for a couple nights then home one night then called out again the following day. He was exhausted. I’m glad we didn’t have anything planned so that he could relax a little after such a grueling week.

Dad brought over a bowl of wild black raspberries he had picked from the timber. I love them, nobody else here cares too much for them. So I made a cobbler. Drew ate one helping. I ate the rest. It was so good. I didn’t eat it all in one sitting – I did stretch it out over a couple, three days!

And  for some I reason decided to make sun tea for Joe and Drew. Drew had asked me to buy a jug of Arnold Palmer tea for them and as I was filling a glass for him it dawned on me, I bet I could  make this a lot cheaper if I made sun tea and put lemon in with it. So I got on Pinterest and guess what, I wasn’t the first to think of this! (I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be before getting on Pinterest – I was wanting to see how others made theirs) Drew thought it was a neat process and Joe enjoyed the tea although next time I’m not supposed to use quite as much lemon! I didn’t realize until I read up on sun tea that it is mostly a Midwest thing. I remember Mom making it a lot for Dad when I was growing up and we saw someone at the camp grounds awhile back making some. I’ll be making sun tea a lot I think the rest of the summer – it sure is cheaper than buying the jugs at the store and it’s so pretty to see sitting outside in the sun. I just wish I liked to drink it. I try but I just can’t get it down.

As you can see – way too many toys and stuff. We don’t have picture perfect bedrooms – we let the kids decorate their own rooms and really make them theirs.

On Saturday Joe mowed, I weeded and put down some more mulch and then we headed to Ottumwa and bought Drew a bunkbed. It’s a long story but he  hasn’t had a bed for the last few months and had been begging for a bunk bed. We had shopped around earlier in the  month so we knew what we wanted and where to get it. We brought it home and spent the rest of the evening putting it together and lo and behold – Drew slept in it! And he slept in it last night. He has not been one to sleep by himself for a very long time so this was huge – for all of us! If I had known a bunk bed would have been all it took, we would have done this a long, long time ago. I don’t know why but with Abby and Aaron we had no trouble with them sleeping in their own beds. Eric and Drew not so much.

Hopefully some day soon this will be deck instead of an eyesore!

Sunday we decided to finally start working on extending the deck. And of course we discovered that while we thought we had some of the boards we needed up in Joe’s woodpile, we actually did not. So after starting in on the project, we had to make a Menards run for more supplies. This was absolutely not in the budget which means we’ll be putting the pergola project on hold until next year. Which is fine. I can wait.  But that also means less work for Joe this summer which is not a bad thing. We didn’t get as much done on the deck as we had hoped and it looks like there’s a lot of rain in the forcast for this week so we might not get much done but we’ll work on it as we can and eventually it will get finished.

And slowly but surely, this will be a useful and pretty space too.

While Joe was working on the deck doing things I couldn’t really help him with, I transplanted some hosta and day lillies that were going to be covered up by the new deck. Since we won’t be working on the pergola this year, I went ahead and planted the daylillies by it. Joe wasn’t wanting me to plant anything more around it until he got the sides put up but I didn’t have anyplace else to put the plants. Plus, we have the mulch to put around it and I don’t want it to set too much longer in the bags for fear it will mildew so this week I plan to put the mulch down too. We’ll just have to work around things the best we can next year and I won’t put anymore plants in until we’re done. We put the pergola up a few years ago thinking we would use it a lot but we just don’t so our plan is to use the old, rusty, corrugated tin we have to put a roof on and put sides about halfway up all the way around with more of the tin and we also plan to put a floor in instead of the loose rock that’s there now. Then it will be shaded, free from rain and somewhat secluded. Hopefully we will use it more this way.

The day lilies are starting to bloom!

That was our weekend. Nothing too  exciting but we did get a few things accomplished. Now onto the week ahead. I’m thankful Joe doesn’t have any scheudled days to be gone overnight this week or for the the next few weeks. Unless some emergency crops up again.  I don’t mind a day or two here and there but being gone the majority of the week just isn’t fun.

My New Old Vacuum Cleaner

Now that I’m basically done subbing at school (I was there Monday and am scheduled for one more day in May), it’s time to get back into following a routine and being more frugal around here. We (I) kind of fell off the wagon the past few weeks and it’s not pretty.  Way too many nights of eating out and running to the store on a whim and being too tired to keep up with more than the basics around here.

One big thing we did accomplish had to do with my vacuum cleaner. I have a Shark that we bought probably 5 or 6 years ago and I’ve loved it but I noticed awhile back that the plastic stretchy hose had cracked. The first crack I noticed I wrapped in duct tape for a quick fix and it really did work. It didn’t look too pretty but hey – who sees my vacuum cleaner but me! Then I noticed it had cracked in another spot that I couldn’t tape up. So I did what I always do when I need help – asked Joe to fix it! We did some research and discovered  we could order a replacement part through Amazon. I ordered the part along with a new set of filters so I could clean one set and have those filters drying and still use the vacuum with another set and lo and behold – it’s like I have a brand new vacuum. It’s works like it’s brand new! And when the filters came – it came with two sets so now I have three sets in all! And even better – while cleaning out the office the other day I came across an Amazon gift card I forgot I had that I was able to use so the hose and replacement filters only cost me a few dollars out of pocket. So now I have a new old vacuum cleaner that will hopefully last me for a long long time! And now to get back into my three day a week vacuuming schedule!

2017

It’s 2017 – a time for new beginnings. And keeping this blog up to date. I don’t know why I stopped – life I guess. And not knowing exactly what I’m doing – it’s a lot easier to just not do anything than it is to figure it out! Anyway – our New Year was quite low key. Joe got a deer and spent yesterday getting it cleaned and in the freezer. Then a quick drive over to Dad and Mom’s. I took my camera along and took a few pictures:

A view of the sun setting down in the timber. Always beautiful!
A view from the timber towards the house.

On the way home we decided to go out for supper. Drew and Joe wanted to go to their favorite barbecue place in a neighboring town. We got cleaned up and headed out only to discover they were closed! So Drew decided Arby’s sounded good. Then home it was – for a little crafting, TV and bed around 10:00. We definitely didn’t see the New Year in. I’m not sure when was the last time I have seen the New Year in!

Today I’ve finished my craft project I started yesterday. I needed something to hang on the backdoor and didn’t want to spend any money. So Pinterest it was and here is the finished product.

So simple – clothes pins, scrapbook paper, an embroidery hoop and craft glue. I used some old weathered pins and liked the look so I kept some of them plain. The rest I glued strips of paper onto the pins using craft glue. I also put a coat of glue on the top of the paper for extra sealant.

And for Valentine’s Day I cut out a heart using cardboard from a cereal box and glued matching strips of paper on. Then clipped it on using another clothes pin so I can take it off later and maybe add something different. I might use different paper on the back of the pins and then I’ll have two wreaths in one. Maybe some Easter or springy colors. The best part – this didn’t cost me a thing. I just dug around in my stash (think hoard!) of old scrapbook supplies and I always have clothes pins lying around the house. Perfect use of old supplies!

The rest of the day should be quiet around here. Eric has to work. Joe is cleaning his shop and hauling wood in before it rains. Drew is going to Grandpa and Grandma’s for a sleepover. I’m going to finish putting Christmas stuff away and settle in with a good movie and some stitching. Either a new Jenny Hoffman pattern for Valentine’s Day or crochet some dishcloths. That’s a new one for me – crochet – I taught myself how a couple of months ago and gave dishcloths and hot pads for Christmas. Now I can’t seem to stop! I have some yarn ordered and am going to start on a blanket. I have way too many dish cloths now! I may never have to buy another one, ever! But they are so great to use. So much better than anything you can buy! They are the perfect project when I’m sitting in the van waiting for Drew to get out of school.

Just a small handful of hot pads and dish cloths. Nothing matches – just grabbed the clearance yarn at the store! I’m thinking I might make a few sets for some camping friends of mine – maybe try and color coordinate with their campers. A nice little gift on our next camping get together.

Thanks for visiting!

Laundry Lessons . ..

IMG_1125Laundry is not my favorite household chore. In fact, I really really don’t like to do laundry.  Unless the weather is nice and I can hang my clothes outside.  Then I don’t mind doing the laundry at all.  There’s just something so relaxing about hanging clothes out.  And seeing those clothes hanging on the line all day, dancing in the wind.   And the wonderful smell of those sun dried clothes.  One of things I so love about summer is being able to have bedding that has been line dried.  I seem to sleep so much better on sun kissed sheets! But one thing I haven’t hung out for years was my towels.  My “guys” didn’t like how stiff they were coming off the line.  So, I did some research to see what I could do to keep them from getting so stiff and this is what I found out – if you tumble dry your sheets for about five minutes in the dryer before you hang them out – they won’t be so stiff.  Yeah!  They aren’t quite as soft as I was hoping but they are definitely softer and it’s so worth it when you consider how much money you are saving by using your clothesline and not your dryer.  It works for jeans too!  A few things I do when hanging my clothes out:

  1.  Since my actual line is plastic cord I clean it periodically with a little warm soapy water and a rag.  Otherwise it can get really gross and gunk may come off onto your clothes.
  2. I hang my whites in the direct sun and my colors in the shade.  You can also hang your whites on the outside line and your colors on the inside lines to keep the colors shaded.  The sun can fade your clothes, which is great for whites, not so great for colors.
  3. I snap each item of clothing before hanging to reduce wrinkles.
  4. When hanging a variety of clothes that belong to different family members, I dedicate a separate line for each person.  I also hang like clothes together – bottoms first, then shirts, socks, etc.  It just looks nicer to me!  I used to not dedicate a line – but would hang all bottoms first, then shirts, etc.  It looked so nice but . . . .
  5. Dedicating the lines makes it easier when taking the clothes off the line.  I always fold them as I’m taking them off and this way they are separated according to person which makes putting them away so quick and easy.  Just grab each individual pile out of the basket and carry them to the coordinating room – easy peasy.

I find it so relaxing to hang my clothes out.  It make me slow down and enjoy the outdoors.  Listen to the birds sing, watch the kittens play.  All while doing a chore that when done inside is exactly that – a chore!

Staycation Day 2

Day 2 of our staycation – on to Maquoketa Caves.  We visited here last year and loved it so much we decided to take my dad and mom along with us this year.  Unfortunately Eric had to work so he had to stay behind.  First we ate our picnic lunch – PB & J sandwiches and chips!  As you can see – at the visitor station Drew found a snake to make friends with.  He loves all things creepy crawly and thank goodness I’m not too squeamish.  I don’t know how I would have survived all these years with three boys if I was!  Drew even let me pet this little guy before giving him back to its owner! (Again, I apologize for the poor quality of the photos.  Forgot my camera again)

Mom was not sure about this. We didn’t realize how much she didn’t like caves until we got in here. Sorry Mom!

I am always amazed at how the terrain changes so drastically in Iowa.  Just a couple of hours from here it is flat and you can see for miles.  Here you find this.  So many people seem to have the misconception that Iowa is all corn fields.  Boy are they wrong!

IMG_6027IMG_6047
You can hike for hours in this State Park – up and down the bluffs – down in the bottom along the water, exploring caves big and small.  It was a little too rough for Dad and Mom so we spent a little time here and then decided to see what else we could find.

We headed towards the beautiful Mississippi River and the river drive.  We drove past the American Pickers headquarters.  It’s not much – a couple little buildings.  We didn’t stop as there were lots of people.  We kept on going – enjoying the Mississippi River.

Mom wanted to try and find Wildcat Den State Park.  She had never been there but remembered Grandpa and Grandma Houseal talk about it when she was young.  Talk about a hidden gem.  It wasn’t easy to find, and we really had no idea what we were getting into.  When we first found the park, we didn’t see anything too exciting – another pretty Iowa State Park to drive through.  But we had been cooped up in the truck for quite some time and Drew needed to get out and run so we pulled into a parking lot that held lots of cars but no people and let him run. Of course, he found a trail and this is the first thing we found:

IMG_2228

A pretty body of water – looked a little deep and was running a little fast.  It would have been so relaxing to just sit along the bank and take a nap here!  But not with Drew – we had to keep exploring! So onto another trail on the other side of the parking lot – and what a great surprise!

IMG_6047IMG_6046This time we found sandstone bluffs.  It was so much fun climbing up and down the bluffs – sometimes between them!  There was graffiti all over them – it doesn’t take much carve a name into sandstone.    It amazes me that we had never heard about this park.  It’s not too far from home.  We even stopped for a potty break and mom asked directions and the lady at the counter had never heard of Wildcat Den – and it was just around the corner from the convenience store!  I love finding places like this – so much better than anything commercialized.

Drew is not afraid of heights – he loves climbing!

IMG_6051The park had this beautiful, easy to walk trail.  We walked and walked until we found the end and then back to the truck.  So much to see, everything was so green and pretty.  I hope to go back this fall when the leaves are changing and the air is crisp and cool.  I bet it would be breathtaking!IMG_6053Two full days of hiking, up and down and all around.  Hopefully this will keep this little guy content for awhile until our next “adventure”!

Memorial Weekend Staycation Fun

IMG_2203
A beautiful barn outside of Solon. I enjoy looking at all the unique barns we have in Iowa.

Drew is always wanting to go on an “adventure”, so we decided to go on one on Saturday.  I had seen an article about waterfalls in Iowa and one of the locations happened to be close to home so off we went!  It was a beautiful day with a chance of rain but we took our chances.  We had camped several times in this area in the past but we had no idea this hidden gem was so close to where we had been.  (I apologize in advance for the pictures – I forgot my camera and was using my phone) We took off mid-morning on our adventure and this is what we found:

Lake Macbride from the dam.
Lake Macbride from the dam – just seconds before the rain!

We found the lake with no problem but it took a little trial and error to find the waterfall.  Then as we were just getting ready to cross the dam on foot it started to rain, hard!  So, we ran back to the truck, drove to town and treated ourselves to an ice cream cone to wait out the rain.  It was worth the wait!

IMG_2214
Drew, as usual, exploring ahead of everyone. The falls are just on the other side of this huge rock.

They weren’t really waterfalls – but were still neat to see.  A fun way to spend the day, didn’t cost much money and we were home and relaxing by evening.  A fun day spent with family!  So much fun that we decided to take my dad and mom the next day on another “adventure”!
